Michael Buckles, Violin

Michael Buckles received a Bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, a Master’s of Music degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University.  He studied with David and Linda Cerone, Jeff Cox, David Updegraff, and Kevork Mardirossian.  He taught violin performance at Dillard University, Xavier University, and the University of New Orleans.  He has performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, was principal second of the Rapides Symphony, and was concertmaster of the Lake Charles Symphony. He has been the featured soloist of the Lake Charles Symphony and regularly performs both standard and contemporary works in the region.  He helped develop the Center for Contemporary Violin Studies at McNeese, where living composers across the country are able to submit their works for review in monthly reading sessions.  He has developed string programs in the New Orleans and Lake Charles areas.   As director of the Lake Charles area youth orchestra, he brought the group to the Louisiana Music Educators’ Association state ensemble festival, doubled its size, and was awarded numerous grants and the City of Lake Charles' Mayor's Award for Cultural Group of the Year.  He is currently the Chair of the Music Department at McNeese State University, and lives in Lake Charles, LA.
